Editorial Policy
This Editorial Policy explains how Names.org.pk researches, verifies and maintains the information published on every name page — meanings, pronunciations, origins, Urdu spellings, and Quranic status. It exists so that families using our site can understand exactly how much confidence to place in what they read, and so that errors can be found and fixed quickly.
How We Research Names
Every name entry begins as a research task, not an assumption. Before a name is published, we look at how the name is actually used in Pakistani and Muslim communities, and we trace it back to its source language and root word. We do not accept a meaning simply because it appears on another website — a meaning is only published once it can be traced to a linguistic source.
How Meanings Are Checked
Meanings are checked against linguistic dictionaries in the name's source language — Arabic, Persian or Urdu — rather than against other name websites, which frequently copy and repeat each other's errors. Where a name has a clear root word, we explain the meaning in terms of that root so the definition can be verified independently.
How Urdu Spellings Are Verified
Urdu script is not a one-to-one transliteration of English spelling, and the same name can be written in Urdu in more than one accepted way. We verify Urdu spellings against standard Urdu usage for the name's origin and, where relevant, against how the name appears in classical or religious texts, rather than generating a script form automatically from the English spelling.
How Origins Are Classified
Muslim names are commonly assumed to be Arabic by default, but a large number are Persian, Urdu, Turkish or of other origin. We classify a name's origin based on the language of its root word and its documented linguistic history, and we distinguish clearly between:
- Arabic origin — the root word belongs to Arabic
- Persian origin — the root word belongs to Persian, even if the name is widely used by Arabic speakers today
- Urdu origin — the name developed within Urdu, often by combining elements from Arabic and Persian
Where a name has been absorbed so thoroughly into a second language that its origin is genuinely disputed among sources, we note that ambiguity rather than picking one origin arbitrarily.
How Quranic Status Is Checked
We label a name as "Quranic" only when the name or its root word can be identified in the actual text of the Quran. We do not label a name Quranic simply because it sounds religious, is popular among Muslims, or is associated with a historical Islamic figure whose name does not itself appear in the Quran. This is a factual, textual check, not a judgment about religious merit.
How Disputed or Uncertain Meanings Are Handled
Some names have more than one meaning recorded across different sources, and for a small number of names the meaning is genuinely uncertain or debated among linguistic references. In these cases we present the meaning as uncertain or list the alternative meanings, rather than presenting a single guessed definition as fact. We would rather tell readers that a meaning is disputed than give a false impression of certainty.
Separating Meaning From Interpretation and Numerology
We keep verified linguistic meaning separate from cultural interpretation and from numerology-based claims about names. Numerology and similar traditions are not linguistic evidence, and we do not treat them as a source for a name's meaning or origin.
How Corrections Are Made
Names.org.pk is maintained by ongoing review, and like any reference work, it can contain mistakes. When a user reports a possible error — an incorrect meaning, a wrong origin, an inaccurate Urdu spelling, or a mistaken Quranic status — we review the report against our sources described above and correct the entry if the report is confirmed. Pages are updated as corrections are verified, and previously published information is revised rather than left unchanged once an error is confirmed.
